Tonight we had our second Charge Council meeting. I wanted to follow up from last weeks message on homosexuality and gay marriage and how they relate to our denominations future. Let's face it, our world is changing and every church, every denomination is trying to figure out how to respond to culture and remain faithful to our mission to make disciples.
I promised to share this article which outlines potential outcomes of the current rumblings of discord in the UMC. In THIS ARTICLE, Mark Tooley outlines the potential results of time, culture, and church growth on the recent rumblings of schism in the UMC due to the issue of homosexuality and gay marriage.
He concludes the article with words of caution as we look to move forward. "I believe that hope for an ongoing strong Wesleyan witness in American Christianity requires the survival and reform of The United Methodist Church, and that any schisms or divisions will likely create small, increasingly splintered communions that form sub cultures lacking the capacity and vision for effectively spreading scriptural holiness across the land."
Ultimately, the issue of schism has little effect on our ministry in this little corner of the world. Simply, we love our neighbors, and we hate to see our neighbors in lack so we serve. It's really that simple. What we need to focus on in addition to serving and loving, is telling God's story and our own stories of transformation.
