Granted now we are starting a new sermon series on the dreaded E-word: Evangelism, but it is also Lent. So this will be a two part post.
Evangelism gets a bad wrap. But only because we don't like to do it. We love to hear stories about other people doing it. But when it's up to us we get a bit nervous. This month I want to put us at ease. I want to offer a process of Invest - Invite - Invest. You will have to come on Sunday to hear how what I"m suggesting is different from what you have in mind, but know that while it may be different from what you think, it is not that new.
More to come....
Giving something up for lent is a good thing I guess. Some people give up Twitter or Facebook. Others stop eating chocolate or drinking coffee. Now I don't want to be too harsh on people who do such things, I think it is great that we are willing to deny any part of ourselves in order to grow our faith or honor God. But I want to challenge us to consider the WHY behind the WHAT.
Why are you giving something up for Lent? is it to grow closer to God? Is it to grow your faith? Is it to develop a new spiritual habit? If so, the why behind your Lenten goal is pretty big - your relationship with God.
So, shouldn't the "what" reflect that? Shouldn't what I give up or begin to do reflect the reason for my efforts? Does my giving up Facebook, while a great thing in general, reflect what I want for my relationship with God? I can't answer that for you, but it's a question we should ask ourselves as we consider this age old practice of self denial in preparation for Easter.
So think about the WHY behind the WHAT as you consider your Lenten plans.
